Much of Town’s imagery is rooted in his early years spent in Cyprus. Even before he had mastered the basics of an English education, he was familiar with myth and mythology; the beach where Aphrodite came ashore, the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, the influence of the Phoenicians, Crusaders and Ottomans, and the symbols and characters of the ancient world. Over the years, this mingled in his mind to produce a lively and varied iconography for his work.

Home turf
This drawing is based on a Tailors & Cleaners’ premises in Brixton, owned by my grandfather, a skilled tailor and a stern Irishman. It’s one of a series of shop fronts on the home page of my website that provide a link to different sections of my portfolio. Alternatively, you can click here to go to Painting 1960 – 1980.

Holidays
This drawing shows a travel agency like the one I visited with my father while living in Cyprus as a boy. It’s one of a series of shop fronts on the home page of my website that provide a link to different sections of my portfolio. Alternatively, you can click here to go to Painting 1980 – 2000.

East Dean, so inspiring I keep coming back…subconscious abstracts emerge from observing the shoreline and the landscape.

Designed to coincide with this year’s festival of Santa Patrono in the town of Serra Sant’Abbondio, this exhibition showcases a small selection of Peter’s work from the last 20 years, during which he has become a regular visitor to this wild and mountainous region in north east Italy. His travels have resulted in a number of studies which capture its beauty and sense of history, on show here for the first time.
Serra Sant’Abbondio, Le Marche, Italy 7-9 September 2018. Architectural details sit alongside landscapes and natural forms, demonstrating a range of styles and techniques common to all of Peter’s work. A highlight of the show takes the form of a series of studies of the local mountain, Monte Catria, which illustrate its changing shape and character throughout one day in the summer of 2011, taking the viewer on a journey from morning mist to evening twilight via a wide range of striking, interpretive styles.
