Stairscapes – Alcove

The source of my Stairscapes theme lies in my early childhood while living in a tall, dimly lit three-storey house. I can still remember dark corridors and stairways and the feel of anaglypta wallpaper in my childhood home, the sound of someone unseen moving around me, and that memory has never left me.
Other artists have shared my preoccupation with stairs, although their motives are varied and very different from my own. The Golden Stairs by Burne-Jones, and Steps at Wick by L S Lowry immediately come to mind.
